Director General Meets with H.E. Maurizio Gasparri, Minister of Communications of Italy.
|On Thursday 13 January 2005 in Rome, the Director General met with H.E. Maurizio Gasparri, Minister of Communications of Italy.|
During this meeting, Minister Gasparri and Toumi discussed the recent developments in the proposed acquisition of Intelsat, Ltd. by four private equity funds, as well as their perspectives on the evolution of international public telecommunications services. They also discussed the progress on the implementation of the Global Broadband Satellite Infrastructure or GBSI Initiative. The purpose of this GBSI Initiative, which is incorporated into the WSIS Plan of Action, is to leverage satellite technology to ensure universal access to high-speed Internet services and disseminate the benefits of innovative and vital online applications.
Minister Gasparri ensured Mr. Toumi of the full support of the Government of Italy for the mission of ITSO and the objectives of the GBSI Initiative. Gasparri expressed his willingness to support and lead any political effort, at the European level, to support the GBSI Initiative.
